The Euro Effie Awards are prestigious and authoritative awards in the marketing communications industry.

A Star is Born: Canon Launches New Digital Video Camcorder for High-Resolution Motion Picture Production

November 4, 2011
Canon Inc.
Canon U.S.A., Inc.

TOKYO, November 4, 2011/HOLLYWOOD, California, November 3, 2011—Canon Inc. and Canon U.S.A., Inc. today raised the curtain on an all-new interchangeable-lens digital video camcorder that combines exceptional imaging performance with outstanding mobility and expandability to meet the demanding production needs of today's motion picture industry. The camcorder, which features a newly developed Super 35 mm-equivalent approximately 8.29-megapixel CMOS sensor, will be available in two models: the EOS C300 Digital Video Camcorder, equipped with an EF lens mount for compatibility with Canon's current diverse lineup of interchangeable EF lenses for EOS single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras and new EF Cinema Lens lineup; and the EOS C300 PL Digital Video Camcorder, with a PL lens mount for use with industry-standard PL lenses.

The introduction of the EOS C300/C300 PL coincides with the launch of the Cinema EOS System, marking Canon's full-fledged entry into the digital high-resolution production industry. The new professional digital cinematography system spans the lens, digital video camcorder and digital SLR camera product categories.

Equipped with an EF lens mount, the EOS C300 is supported by an all-star cast of high-performance EF lenses, not only the wide array of interchangeable EF lenses for EOS SLR cameras that have earned the trust and respect of photographers around the world, but also the EF cinema lenses in the newly announced

Cinema EOS System. When outfitted with a Canon EF lens, the C300's peripheral illumination correction*1 automatically corrects for vignetting in accordance with each lens's optical characteristics, and enables iris control from the camcorder.*1 Canon EF lenses also enable the recording of such metadata*1 as the name of the lens used, aperture setting and shutter speed.

The Canon EOS C300/C300 PL's newly developed Super 35 mm-equivalent CMOS sensor incorporates approximately 8.29 million effective pixels and has a pixel size that is larger than that for conventional professional camcorders, enabling greater light-gathering capabilities for enhanced sensitivity and reduced noise. The sensor reads Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) video signals for each of the three RGB primary colors, decreasing the incidence of moiré while realizing high resolution with 1,000 horizontal TV lines.

Supported by a heightened signal read-out speed, the CMOS sensor reduces rolling shutter skews, a phenomenon prevalent with CMOS sensors in which fast-moving subjects may appear diagonally distorted. Additionally, the powerful combination of the sensor with Canon's high-performance DIGIC DV III image processor facilitates high-precision gamma processing and smooth gradation expression.

In addition to MPEG-2 Full HD (MPEG2 422@HL compliant) compression, the EOS C300/C300 PL employs 4:2:2 color sampling for high-resolution performance that minimizes the appearance of "jaggies" at chroma edges. Additionally, with a maximum recording rate of 50 Mbps, the camcorder supports the recording of high-quality video.

The camcorder's video and audio recording file format adopts the industry-standard MXF (Material eXchange Format), an open source file format ideally suited for non-linear editing systems. Recording to versatile, readily available CF cards, the EOS C300/C300 PL realizes high cost-performance and, equipped with two CF card slots, makes possible the simultaneous recording of video data to two CF cards.

With a compact body design measuring 133 (w) x 179 (h) x 171 mm (d), the Canon EOS C300/C300 PL delivers exceptional maneuverability, enabling shooting from vantage points all but inaccessible to large cinema cameras, such as close to the ground for high-impact low-angle shots, and alongside walls. In accordance with on-location shooting needs, the camcorder can be outfitted with a handle, grip, thumb rest and monitor unit, and offers an array of industry-standard terminals, including HD/SD-SDI video output for the external recording of high-quality video content. When using a WFT-E6B wireless file transmitter for EOS digital SLR cameras (sold separately), the EOS C300/C300 PL can be controlled remotely by means of such common devices as smartphones or tablet PCs.

The camcorder is equipped with four start/stop buttons positioned at various locations to satisfy any preferred camera-holding style, and can be outfitted with a variety of third-party accessories, including matte boxes, follow focuses and external video and audio recorders. The unit also achieves seamless integration with third-party editing systems and provides added peace of mind through its dust-proof, drip-proof construction and built-in cooling system.

The new camcorder allows users to adjust image quality to match that of professional camcorders and EOS-series digital SLR cameras, and offers Canon Log Gamma, enabling flat image quality with subdued contrast and sharpness for maximum freedom in post-production editing and processing. In addition to frame rates of 59.41i, 50.00i, 29.97P, 25.00P and 23.98P, the EOS C300/C300 PL features a 24.00p mode, matching the 24 frame-per-second frame rate of film cameras for high compatibility with common film-production workflows.

Other features include fast-motion shooting, achieved by capturing fewer frames per second to create action up to 60x normal speed, and slow-motion down to 1/2.5x*2 made possible by capturing more frames per second. Frame rates between 1 and 60 frames per second (fps)*3 can be adjusted in increments of 1 fps. Additionally, a selection of Custom Pictures lets users freely adjust image quality for greater control over how content looks.

The Canon EOS C300 (EF mount) digital video camcorder is scheduled to be available in late January 2012 in select regions. The Canon EOS C300 PL (PL mount) digital video camcorder is scheduled to be available in late March 2012 in select regions. Please contact an authorized dealer for detailed pricing and availability information in your region.

*1Compatible features differ depending on the EF Cinema Lens used.*21/2.5x possible only when recording in 720p mode.*3When 59.41i frame rate is selected.

Canon celebrates production of 50 million EOS SLR cameras, 70 million EF interchangeable lenses

October 18, 2011
Canon Inc.
Canon Marketing Japan Inc.

TOKYO, October 18, 2011—Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. announced today the achievement of two major manufacturing milestones: combined production of film and digital EOS-series single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras surpassed the 50-million mark in September this year, and the EF series of interchangeable lenses is expected to reach the 70-million-unit milestone later this month.

Production of Canon EOS SLR cameras first started in 1987 at Canon Inc.'s Fukushima Plant (now Fukushima Canon Inc.), and later moved to Oita Canon Inc. and Canon Inc., Taiwan; and most recently Nagasaki Canon Inc. in 2010. In 1997, the EOS series celebrated its 10-year anniversary in addition to the 10-millionth unit produced, and in 2003 passed the 20-million mark. Following the rapid spread of digital SLR cameras, Canon went on to reach 30-million units produced during the series' 20-year anniversary in 2007, followed by the 40-million mark in May 2010. After a short one year and four months, the EOS series has now come to celebrate its 50-millionth camera produced.

The EOS series, which stands for "Electro Optical System" and also carries the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn, was first introduced in March 1987 as a new generation of AF SLR cameras that incorporate the world's first electronic mount system, achieving complete electronic control not only between the lens and body but throughout the entire camera system.

With the key concepts of high speed and ease of use, EOS-series cameras, including the top-of-the-line EOS-1 professional model released in 1989 and the popular compact, lightweight EOS Kiss (EOS Rebel XS or EOS 500 in other regions) introduced in 1993, actively incorporate innovative technologies and have gained acceptance from a wide range of users. Following the introduction of the EOS D30 in 2000, when the spread of digital SLR cameras was in full swing, Canon developed such advanced technologies as its proprietary CMOS sensors and high-performance DIGIC digital image processors, as well as an extensive lineup of EF lenses in an effort to fulfill the company's new key concepts of high speed, ease-of-use, and high image quality.

Currently, the company offers a broad product lineup that serves the needs of all levels of users, from entry-level enthusiasts to advanced amateurs and professionals. This lineup has further expanded with the addition of the new high-performance EOS-1D X, Canon's new flagship digital SLR camera, scheduled to go on sale in late March 2012.

Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) film cameras first began in 1987 at the company's Utsunomiya Plant, and has since expanded to a total of four manufacturing centers, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan. Production of EF lenses surpassed the 10-million mark in 1995, doubling to 20-million units in 2001. After reaching the 30-million-unit milestone in 2006, Canon celebrated the production of its 40-millionth lens in April 2008. Owing to the rapid spread of the EOS Digital series of digital SLR cameras, production for Canon's EF lenses then gained momentum to reach the 50-million-unit milestone in 2009, followed by the 60-million mark in January this year. And just nine months later, the EF series is expected to reach the 70-million mark in late October.

Canon's EF lens series was first introduced together with the EOS SLR camera system in March 1987, and has over the years led the industry through the incorporation of a number of innovative technologies, including such world's firsts*1 as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for use in lenses, Image Stabilizer (IS), Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology, and a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element.

Canon's current EF-lens lineup, comprising 66 models,*2 ranges from super-wide-angle lenses to super-telephoto zoom lenses. The diverse lens selection includes an array of zoom lenses, Image Stabilizer-equipped lenses, large-diameter lenses, macro-lenses and TS-E lenses incorporating a special tilt-shift mechanism allowing manipulation of image perspective and distortion. This year, Canon released such EF lenses as the EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM—the world's first*1 full fisheye zoom lens with angle-of-view coverage from 180-degree circular fisheye to 180-degree diagonal fisheye—and the EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM telephoto lenses.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers—from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals—while contributing to expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.

Singapore Printer Brands Launch First-Ever Joint Recycling Initiative - Project Homecoming

Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson and Lexmark join hands to raise public environmental awareness through Singapore's first joint cartridge recycling project

Singapore, 1 December 2011 – Five major printer brands based in Singapore: Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson and Lexmark, with the support of the National Environment Agency (NEA) and National Library Board (NLB), have announced the launch of Singapore's first-ever joint funded and managed printer brand ink and toner cartridge recycling initiative: Project Homecoming.

As the first international expansion of a successful joint printer brand recycling project (called "Ink Cartridge Satogaeri") started in Japan three years ago, the project aims to encourage community awareness and environmental responsibility among Singaporeans through convenient cartridge recycling initiatives and education.

Project Homecoming will provide easily accessible cartridge recycling bins at 13 NLB libraries where the public can deposit used ink and toner cartridges from printers of any brand for recycling – even those of other brands not in the Project Homecoming partnership. The cartridges are then periodically collected for proper recycling.

"We aim to bring greater convenience to the public who are keen on making a personal contribution to recycling efforts across the island, and are proud to be working together as a team to jointly fund and promote the culture of recycling in Singapore," said Andrew Koh, lead spokesperson for Project

Homecoming and Senior Director and General Manager, Consumer Imaging & Information Products Division, Canon Singapore. "With strong support from the NEA and NLB, we will be able to give back to society through this initiative as socially responsible organisations, while driving home the message of environmental awareness through cartridge recycling as part of joint sustainability efforts from the printing industry."

Joseph Hui, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NEA said, "We are proud to support Project Homecoming, which is an exemplary initiative by the five brands and the National Library Board to bring greater convenience to the community to recycle used printer cartridges so that they will not go to waste. Together with the support of the community, we hope to see more organisations promote waste reduction, reuse and recycling and to form partnerships where common sustainability objectives can be found."

Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of NLB said, "The National Library Board is pleased to participate in Project Homecoming, the first-of-its-kind initiative outside Japan and in Singapore. This partnership allows NLB to contribute and reinforce our commitment to environment sustainability for the greater good of future generations. Through our network of public libraries, we hope to bring the message of the importance of recycling closer to the community and foster a green mindset. We also encourage our library users to play their part in protecting the environment."

Recycling vendors of the joint initiative will collect the cartridges from the boxes and break down recyclable parts including plastics and metal. These recycling processes will help minimise waste, landfill and pollution while maximising the recovery of valuable resources.

Project Homecoming's partners and supporting government agencies hope that the project will achieve a similar measure of success in Singapore, and that similar schemes will be replicated throughout the world in the future.

Pioneer Eco Ltd. Series Bound Photo Album, Designer Style Color Covers with Natural Brown Paper Pages, Holds 300 4x6" Photos, 3 Per Page. Review

Possibly, as long as ten years ago, I purchased an Eco Photo Album to be used for my hunting photographs.
A few weeks ago I discovered that I needed a new album and proceeded to Amazon.com.
I immediately located a company that sold the very same album I purchased years ago, placed my order and later received the new album.
It is very satisfying to discover, with the aid of Amazon.com, that a product you purchased and used successfully is still available many years later.
Thanks Amazon.com! Keep up the good work!

Elements Bundle: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 A to Z: Tools and features illustrated ready reference Review

Philip Andrews has written a lot of books for the users of Photoshop and they are by all means "well explained&illustrated".
As no other he knows what "teaching" is and his latest Adobe Ph Elements 4 A to Z confirms my opinion.
You 'll find everything about the software in an alphabetical order with a lot of examples in this book.
It's a continuous reminder when you hesitate about some features working on some photographs or compositions. His style is clear, efficient and above all practical.
Even for owners of other tutorial books or intermediate users this book is very useful;a good investment if you want to improve your skills. It can be used by owners of previous versions of the software too.Buy it and you won't regret it!!

Flickr Hacks: Tips & Tools for Sharing Photos Online Review

Flickr is one of those web sites that has gone in directions I don't think anyone ever imagined it would go. What started out as simple photo-sharing is now a full-featured site with a programming API. Many of these are covered and explored in the book Flickr Hacks - Tips & Tools for Sharing Photos Online by Paul Bausch & Jim Bumgardner.
Contents: Sharing Photos; Tagging Photos; Viewing Photos; Community; Maintenance; API Basics; Custom Applications; Index
At the core, Flickr is a site to share pictures online with friends, family, or anyone else you open your pictures to. And pretty much, that's all I've used it for. I don't take a lot of pictures, but the ones I have taken that relate to shared experiences (like Lotusphere) have made it up there. In fact, someone sponsored me for a professional Flickr account (thank you!), but it's about ready to expire. I wasn't planning on renewing it at that level, but I may have to reconsider after reading this book. The book is about the size of a normal Hacks title, but there's only 50 hacks in here. As you can imagine, each one goes into much more detail than normal. And there *is* some fun stuff in here. If you have a little background in PHP or Perl, you can really get crazy, too. For instance, I didn't know you could email photos to your Flickr account. Hack #6 shows how that works, and it explains how Flickr can often serve as a real-time look into breaking events such as the London train bombing. People were using their cell phones to take pictures and then mailing them in to the Flickr account. Or for fun stuff, you can use the Flickr API to build routines to create "ransom note" messages (a different picture for each letter, "glued" together into sentences) in hack #47. Hack #48 shows you how to take one of your photos and create a "slider puzzle" out of it. And in between those two ranges you'll find a number of things that will cause you, like they did me, to say "Flickr can do that?"...
If you use Flickr and actively load photos out there, this will be a "must read" book to enhance and expand your Flickr experience. Even if you're just a casual user like me, you'll have your eyes opened to some new possibilities. Now where was that Flickr renewal email?

Flickr Hacks: Tips & Tools for Sharing Photos Online Overview

Over two million registered Flickr users and counting have discovered the ease and fun of organizing their photo libraries, showing off their favorite pictures to the world, and securely sharing their private pictures with friends, family, or ad hoc groups. But Flickr's own plethora of intuitive menus, options, and features just scratches the surface.

Flickr Hacks goes beyond the basics of storing, sorting, and sharing your photos to the much bigger playground of what's possible. Whether you're a beginner looking to manage your metadata and play with tags, or a programmer in need of a detailed reference of Flickr API methods, you'll find what you're looking for here. In addition to getting under the hood of some of the most popular third-party Flickr toys already in the wild, you'll learn how to:

Post photos to your blog directly from your cameraphone
Mash up your own photos or others' public pictures into custom mosaics, collages, sliding puzzles, slideshows, or ransom notes
Back up your Flickr library to your desktop, and save the comments too
Set random desktop backgrounds and build your own Flickr screensaver
Geotag your photos and map your contacts
Download a list of photos and make a contact sheet
Make your own Flickr-style tag cloud to visualize the frequency of common tags
Build a color picker with a dynamic color wheel of Flickr photos
Feed photos to your web site and subscribe to custom Flickr feeds using RSS
Talk to the Flickr API using your web browser, Perl, or PHP; authenticate yourself and other users; and build custom API applications

Flash Techniques for Macro and Close-Up Photography: A Guide for Digital Photographers Review

If you, like me, are in the Macro photography field, then make you a big favor and don't waste your money with this book. I have dozens of photography books but this one is the worst of them all. It shows a bunch of photos of a couple giving a course to students, shows very bad flash techniques and doesn't even mention the most used flash systems for macro photography like Flash Rings, SpeedLite, SpeedLight, Twin Lite, etc. just a bunch of flash diffusers. The macro photos are pathetic and many of them are "really" out of focus with a legend that says that you can make them to suggest a subject... what was that? I really regret to have spent my money on this crap. Really a bad bad book.

Kleer-Vu Photo Album, Leatherette Huge Collection, Holds 500 4x6" Photos, 5 Per Page. Color: Black. Review

After reading Amazon's many customer reviews presented about ADORAMA both negative and positive on the album's design, etc., it was a good choice for my photo storage needs. THe 4"x6" sleeve sizes laid out for a 5 photo layout each page was fine.
Answered the call for holding 500! which I was happy to see it could do in a very simple way and not in a poorly designed way at that. Being delicate with the soft plasticized pages as you turn them won't hurt.
Still sturdy enough, though.
The Leatherette cover had a pleasant appearance, nothing fancy. A good product shipped and received from this company in a timely manner.
If you are looking to find off-beat or irregularly-shaped sleeves for photos and your fantasy scrapbooking ideas, look around. But if you are just doing it plain and simple to hold your dearest and best memories of what's been important to you to display to share with others, this certainly can do the trick.
Most likely will return to check out more Adorama items.

Scott Kelby's books are a must have for both beginner and advanced professionals. They are easy to read, very conversational, and the information is second to none. I have read both of these books several times and have learned so many fantastic tips to get to the next level in my photography career. As a beginning professional I have referenced these techniques many times over and my photographs have improved 100%.
This is a fabulous gift for the photographer on your list and will be used over and over.
Scott Kelby has a wonderful sense of humor - he really is funny. You won't be bored reading and learning from Scott like some techno bordom books out there. He makes it easy in plain english.
They probably won't be suitable for someone who is a stiff and has no personality.

Your Camera Loves You: Learn to Love It Back Review

I just received my copy of "Your Camera Loves You - Learn to Love it Back" today. What a fantastic resource! It's tailored to any skill level, but it's especially useful for someone like me who is a total novice at photography. I don't know how to do much beyond automatic mode, and this makes it easy to significantly improve my photo-taking skills without slogging through my Canon SLR's manual, with all of its dull, tiny, black and white print. Author Khara Plicanic writes in a fun, easy-to-understand and digest manner; she really "gets" what the average person needs out of a photography resource. Plus, the images that accompany the book show stunning "before and afters" that really bring to life why you should make an effort to use your camera beyond auto-mode. Own a digital camera? You want this book. It would also make a great gift for just about anyone!

Your Camera Loves You: Learn to Love It Back Overview

Wait–what!? You're not thrilled with the photos you're getting from your digital camera? The answer isn't a new camera–it's learning to use the one you've got! After all, it's not the camera that takes great photos–it's the person behind it. With Your Camera Loves You: Learn to Love it Back, photographer and instructor Khara Plicanic teaches the basics of photography and digital camera functions that you can apply to any camera, anywhere, any time–answering questions like: What do all those different modes mean and when do I use them? What's a megapixel and why should I care? Follow along with Khara's simple explanations of shutter speed, aperture, and shooting modes to get comfortable handling your camera (even bossing it around a bit!), learn to shoot images that tell a story, and understand the thought process involved in making a great photograph. Along the way you'll learn techniques for improving those yellow dingy photos of your kids' indoor sporting events, fixing exposure on shots that are too dark or too bright, avoiding the dangers of over-cropping, and much more. By the time you're finished, you'll know how to best use the features of whatever camera you already have–whether it's a high-performance DSLR or a basic point-and-shoot camera. Get ready to fall in love with your camera (and photography) all over again! With Your Camera Loves You, you will: • Move beyond "Auto" mode to take advantage of more of your camera's features and settings • Discover that the key to getting great images isn't by using a fancy DSLR but by learning your way around whatever camera you have • Learn from Khara's fun, friendly voice and techno-babble-free explanations how to easily improve your photos And as you learn, share your progress by posting your photos on Flickr.

Nikon D3100 Digital Field Guide Review

There is always going to be a learning curve with a new camera but having a book like this will help speed up the process. The first three chapters cover the basic functions of the D3100 and essential information about everything from lighting to lenses is also included. The best part of this field guide, however, is Chapter 8: Real World Applications. The inspiration photographs in this chapter are beautiful and if you are willing to go out in the field and work through the practice exercises you will have a better understanding of the D3100's capabilities, as well as your own capabilities as a photographer.
The book's format is user friendly: tips, notes, caution, and cross reference icons highlight important information, bulleted lists and diagrams make for easy reference. Thomas' writing is clear and to the point and he throws in a bit of humor to keep the prose from becoming overly clinical, which is refreshing.
Overall, the Nikon field guide series of books by J. Dennis Thomas have been extremely helpful as I have made the transition from analog to digital photography. I started experimenting with digital photography a few years ago when my fiance gave me a Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera and Thomas' Coolpix field guide as a birthday present. I worked through the practice photo exercises in that book and played around with the camera a lot. As a result, I learned how to take better pictures with a point and shoot digital camera and how to work with digital files. Still, I missed the flexibility that a traditional SLR camera offered and knew that if I wanted to take my digital photography to the next level I would have to purchase a dSLR camera. After extensive research, I decided that the D3100 was the best choice for my needs and budget and I purchased this book because I found Thomas' Coolpix field guide useful.
Informative and user friendly, this book doesn't sit on a shelf because I actually use it when in the field. A good investment if you are looking to expand your skills as a photographer.

David Busch's Nikon D5000 Guide to Digital SLR Photography Review

Although it is as easy to use as a point and shoot camera, the Nikon D5000 really deserves a manual that is better than the one supplied with the camera. This is that manual. You can start out with the D5000 as a point and shoot camera, and this book will help you make the basic settings you need to do that. But when you're ready to do more and take better pictures, this is the book you need. It gives the D5000 the respect it deserves, with lots of information that a newbie can use to learn how to work with the more advanced features of the Nikon.
I wasn't happy with the barebones style of other camera books I looked at. It just isn't possible to squeeze everything you need to know into a small book, especially when a lot of space is taken up just repeating information that's in Nikon's little guide. They also include much general photography information that can apply to any camera. Busch's Guide to Digital SLR Photography does explain the things that are in the manual, too, but also explains other topics and relates them directly to the Nikon D5000.
Like another reviewer, I was very pleased with the chapter on lenses. Nikon has so many different lenses, and even more are available from Tamron and Sigma. The lens chapter looks at many different lens choices, including all of Nikon's current lenses, and helps you sort out which ones you might want to buy. The electronic flash chapter was equally informative with the choices among electronic flash equipment.
I was wowed by how good a camera the Nikon D5000 is, and I was equally impressed at how this book does a great camera justice. Don't settle for anything less.

The Digital SLR Expert Portrait Photography Review

My first thought on getting Amazon's promo email for this book is that it is probably redundant over most portrait technique books. This suspicion is heightened by the list of subjects covered in the editorial review, none of which seems unique to digital SLRs, the supposed focus of the book.
BUT WAIT - there is one subject listed I've never, ever seen covered by another book: "weeding photography."
So if you aspire to shoot for the Smith & Hawkins catalog, this is the book for you!

Carson Optical Twin LED BookBrite Book Light Review

Not much to say except this thing is very, very bright, and the batteries last a fair while. I like to take it and a few extra batteries on camping trips to use as book light and flashlight.
I don't use it so much for clip-on-the book purposes as a flashlight to read by. It does need to be backed a little further from a book than the arm allows. However, it's such a compact thing that that's easy to do. The Amazon photo doesn't really show its versatility..
It's not waterproof. I wound up getting soaked, and this thing gave out instantly. Next time out, I'll use a baggie.
However, it can take a fair amount of dropping and banging and still keep working. (I'm kind of hard on my stuff.) An all around good product.

Things to Look for in Digital Camera

By Dmitry Vasenyov

When you are shopping for a new digital camera, there are a lot of different things that have to be taken into account and some of them are discusses below.

Primarily, it is necessary to mention that buying a new digital camera will not make you a better photographer. But what will actually make you a better photographer is you. However high end digital camera will offer you better control over your image making and that's all.

Before you actually purchase a new camera, you have to find out what you want to do this it. If you want to post your photos on the web, email them or make small prints for your family albums, then it is enough for you to search for a digital camera with low resolution. For example, 2 megapixels camera will create an image that could be a high quality 6x4 print. The majority of entry level SLR cameras start at about 6 megapixels. And thus if this is all you want and need, the amount of megapixels does not have to be a great concern for you.

But if you want to make large sized pictures, then you could need a higher resolution camera. In fact, more megapixels give you an opportunity to enlarge your photos.

All the digital cameras come with different features and modes. And some of these features seem to be included for no other reasons than to be a selling point for a certain model. In fact, it takes some research to discern which are going to be useful. However, there are some that you have to take into consideration. First of all, you have to determine what mode settings the camera has.

Various entry level SLR's have almost the same settings as shoot and point cameras. These are landscape, portrait and low light to name few of them. Of course, these settings make the life much easier, however still the point to move up to an SLR camera is to have more control over your photos.

Magic Lantern Guides: Canon Powershot G10 Review

I gave this guide 5 stars because I found it to be a godsend. I'm very new to digital photography and bought my G10 a couple of months ago. I found the Canon manual very difficult and uninspiring. I then ordered this new G10 guide by Jason Schneider. When it arrived I felt like I was delivered from techie hell. It gives me an appreciation for the truly outstanding camera I blew my budget for. The approach is rational, the information is accurate, and the experience of reading this guide is pleasant. I brought this manual on a recent vacation and learned as I snapped away. I would encourage anyone to order this book as the first accessory for their Canon G10.

Rite in the Rain All Weather Geological Field Book Review

This may be the only field book you'll ever need. The pages of reference in the back are invaluable. The paper is weather proof and when you pair it up with a Tactical all metal Rite in the Rain pen you can take notes in a hurricane and they'll look perfect. I do love this book, however, it is geared to academics. I don't do a ton of field mapping to scale since I don't have time to sit down and draw nice pictures on my job. Also, the info on the reference pages can be easily condensed onto a laminated piece of paper that you can use even after you fill the book. I find the "Level" or "Universal" versions with two lined pages a little easier for taking written notes and still provides a place for quick sketches. They are also a few bucks cheaper and without the reference pages you get more room for notes. Check out all their stuff on www.riteintherain.com.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Photographers Guide Review

OK, you've purchased a DSLR and either Photoshop CS3 or Elements. Now you want to know how you can best use your new camera to capture the best images you can, so that when you get them into Photoshop you'll be able to process them to their fullest potential and really get some impressive images, much better than the point n shoot crowd. You can spend 3 years and read nearly 20 books like I did, but who really has time for that? Isn't there one book out there that gives someone a good taste of all of the components of photography and Photoshop? Yep, this is the one! I've read it through, and comparing it to several other all-in-one guides to both photography and Photoshop, this is one of the best choices. There are many good soup-to-nuts Photoshop books out there, but not many of them teach how to optimize your photography skills to ensure the best possible image BEFORE firing up Photoshop. How do you get a great image out of Photoshop? Start with a great image. This book tells you how, and it's not just for beginners.
Pick this one up, even if you own a different version of Photoshop. It's a winner.

Hands-On Digital Photography: A Step-By-Step Course in Camera Controls, Software Techniques, and Successful Imaging Review

Many years ago I had the pleasure of taking a course with George Schaub in 35mm photography & lighting. He is a role model and photographic hero of mine. I love his work. The easy-going style found in his mannerisms and his lectures is clearly present in this book.
In that class I would always be struck by the quality of his photographs - this book is no different than that experience. You are first stunned by the artistic beauty of his work and then he breaks down the steps required to create a similar result.
The format questions are addressed in clear terms. If you ever wondered about RAW images versus TIFF versus JPEG, your questions will be answered. This book describes file size when saved in different formats and thsn the quality of the photo with the best enlargement outcomes.
The step-by-step guide that he offers is easy to understand and laid out in a way that you can literally walk through his process. He first describes how the process works. What are the mechanics of this effect? He then moves into 'try it,' so that you are walked through how to get there. Advanced options is where he offers some creative license to those who may be daring to try something else. This is his approach throughout the book. You get to see photographs that reflect many shooting situations that the serious photographer is always on the look out for capturing.
If you are seriously looking into or have a DLSR - you will LOVE this book. If you are catching up to the digital age from the 35mm age, you too will enjoy this book. If you want to learn how to love your camera and photography, you will catch what George Schaub embodies in his work and his life and that is his love of photography. That's what I caught from him years ago and it's still growing. Happy reading.

How Digital Photography Works (2nd Edition) Review

Anyone with a solid background in photography and digital imaging can tell you that popular digital photography resources - particularly online, and particularly those with unmoderated user forums - are filled with partially (or entirely) incorrect information on this topic. As a rule, most people who use digital cameras on a regular basis, do not understand how they work... even when they think they do.
This book is a quick study and a tremendous aid in understanding the underlying technology, mechanisms and science behind digital photographs. There is also quite a bit of useful information on how lenses work, and rightly so as they are at least 50% of the "picture quality equation". The illustrations alone are worth the cost of the book. The writing style is down-to-earth but not dumbed down, which is refreshing.
My only complaint about this book is its layout. There is SO much information to convey about each aspect of the photography process, that the illustrations and text tend to get badly jumbled in some sections. Attempts were made to use a "1-2-3 bullet point approach", and it works in most areas but not all. Since much of the information necessarily must be conveyed on a single page, the solution for the next edition is to make the book slightly larger. About 2" in both directions would enable the effective use of empty space, allow larger fonts (some are extremely small), and in general make for a better layout.
Still, I have formal (collegiate) education in the field of photography, have worked in the industry for over five years, and still found many pages in this book to be a huge help / great refresher. Unless you are an engineer working for Nikon or Kodak, there is something in this book that will increase your understanding of digital photography. Definitely recommended.

Sekonic L-758DR Light Meter (Black) Review

I really like this meter. It does everything I need and a bit more. I find it easy to use as it follows similar interface design as my DSLR's "press-this-and-spin-that" UI. The integrated pocket wizard, ability to meter light ratios and balance ambient light is fantastic. The use of this meter has improved my shots.
A previous reviewer said the interface was poor - I disagree. The interface is extremely simple for the basic functions you'll use all the time. Set the ISO, take a reading, change between reflected spot and incident, set the pocket wizard channel, set the exposure time for ambient, etc.
When using the more advanced features, it gets a little more complicated. For example, metering the highlights, the shadows and mid-tones and display them all at once, or meter the lighting ratio between lights. Perhaps it could be a little easier but I don't find it a hinderance.
In fact I didn't notice the complexity as it's no more complicated than most of the features on my Nikon D700. The Sekonic, happily, follows the same convention of rapid key combinations for instant access to features instead of slow menu driven interfaces. Yes the menus are easier to learn - but you'd pay that speed penalty every time you'd use it. Once you learn how to play the Sekonic's keys, the price is paid and you get the speed benefit every time you use it.
Now it would be slick if, like the pro DSLRs, they provided both a menu and a key. But I still wouldn't use the menu.

Sekonic L-758DR Light Meter (Black) Overview

Spot & Incident Light Readings Under Flash and/or Ambient Lighting Conditions Calibrated to match the Sensitivity of Your Camera's Imaging SensorThe Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster is simply the most dynamic light meter you will ever own. It can record incident or 1-degree spot-readings under ambient and/or strobe lighting down to a tenth-stop in accuracy, and it's sealed against the nastiest of weather. With the included Sekonic RT-32 Radio Transmitter Module and you can wirelessly trigger PocketWizard-enabled flash systems within a 100' range. But that's not what makes the Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster different from any other meter you have owned. What moves the L-758DR DigitalMaster to the head of the class is that it is the only meter that can be calibrated to read light the way the sensor in your particular camerareads light.Like film, imaging sensors vary in light sensitivity levels from one batch to the next. Despite manufacturers best efforts, fluctuations of native ISO sensitivities of up to plus/minus half-a-stop can be detected across the uncut wafers as they come off the manufacturing line. Depending on which ‘slice of the pie' is inside your camera, the specs listed in the camera manual may not hold true to the characteristics of the sensor in your particular camera.By running an easy calibration test using Sekonic's L-758DR, a Sekonic Exposure Profile Target (optional) and the included Data Transfer Software (Mac & Windows), you can accurately profile the sensitivity characteristics of your camera's sensor to determine the compensation value for its true native ISO, dynamic range and clipping points. After calculating the test data and establishing new exposure parameters, this data is uploaded from your computer via the included USB cable back to the meter where it is stored as camera profiles. Profiling data from up to 3 cameras can be stored in your meter for instant recall.

This book provided some good tips and techniques for taking Nature photography. However if you have more than a intermediate knowledge of photography then you may find this book a bit boring.

Deluxe Leather Photo Album with Faux Suede Interior Lining - Stores 300 Pictures Review

Very nice photo album. Holds a lot of pictures and looks great on the shelf.
The album is quite tall, so it doesn't fit on our shorter shelves, but looks great on the larger shelves we have.
We got more of these albums, and I've added a video, sorry the video's not very good. We like to store vacation pictures in these and now we're going to have an album for each one of the kids to put pictures in.

'Pampa' leather scrapbook album to 8''x8'' with cover window by PRAT Paris - Review

i really needed a scrapbook, and got this miniscule, more-photo-album than a scrapbook. maybe i don't know sizes but i didn't think 8 by 8 would be so small. it's the size of a normal sized plate. but in a square shape of course. and the paper is not some fantastic paper. its the ones you use when doing a presentation for a project. that hard paper. i don't know, i just suspected it would be high quality, glossy paper. this scrapbook with the paper made me think, "looks like i could have put this together." if i wanted/expected something as tiny as this then i would be giving it 5 stars and say it is cute. of course i'd be expecting it to cost much less too. but i have lots of normal sized pics/clippings (from mags e.t.c) and this is no use to me. there's no way my pics can fit in this. bottom line, for so much $ i expected more. i've learned my lesson to go in a shop to buy these kinds of stuff. b/c you can't tell what you're purchasing when it's on line.

Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop Review

I thought that my photographically-inclined high school kid could get something out of this book, but my husband and I have both found ourselves referring to it in our professional life. Beautiful examples and very cleanly-discussed direction. I really enjoy the tone of the author and the sheer volume of photos to learn from is impressive. "The digital darkroom" is a new thing to a lot of people, but catching on strong as we realize how much flexibility is built into the files if you do it right. This book does a great job of showing you how to put the most into the image in-camera, and then how to push it even further.

Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop Overview

How to create stunning black and white photos in a digital format
Shooting pictures in black and white presents unique challenges for beginners and experienced digital photographers alike. A strong understanding of photography's fundamentals is crucial to capturing great black and white images, and factors such as contrast and lighting are much more integral to black and white photography than to color. Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop teaches digital photographers the skills they need to master black and white photography.
Focuses on the rules of photography and how they apply differently to black and white photography
Offers guidance for properly uploading digital images to a computer
Explains insider tips and tricks for using Photoshop and Lightroom to successfully enhance black and white images

Black and white photography presents different challenges than color photography. In Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop, photographers learn how to identify great opportunities for black and white photographs and how to turn those opportunities into stunning monochrome images they can be proud to display. From the Author: Sample Photos and Their Stories One vital element of good black and white photography is lighting and how the light affects your subjects. I believe that many of the black and white images that I shoot are light driven, meaning that many times I will see how the light and shadow are interacting with the subject in front of me, and will use the tones and contrast there to determine if it should be a color or black and white image. This can happen whether there is the bold contrast of big areas of light and shadow, or the subtle tones of gray, smoothly fading towards bright and dark areas. Pay attention to the shapes and textures of the scene in front of your camera, and start to engage your brain in trying to learn how the colors of real life will convert into tones and textures in monochrome. In your home, on a walk or even on your commute, begin to see the tones of light and dark all around you to help visualize how the contrast of the light is creating the emotional tone of the scenes in front of you. Ask yourself questions about the light always helps in visualizing-is this a bright or dark scene? Is the interaction of the light and dark areas of the scene hard and abrupt or is it soft and gradual? How does this light fit the scene? And finally' how does the light in the scene make me feel? Spend more time trying to visualize how light is creating the shape, texture and contrast in the scene in front of your camera and the feel that you are attempting to share in your black and white photographs, than worrying too much about a lot of technically perfect settings. Imparting the feel and emotion of the scene in front of you will be far more impactful to the viewer than making sure you had just the right f/stop. Commuter(see story below)
