Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop Review

I thought that my photographically-inclined high school kid could get something out of this book, but my husband and I have both found ourselves referring to it in our professional life. Beautiful examples and very cleanly-discussed direction. I really enjoy the tone of the author and the sheer volume of photos to learn from is impressive. "The digital darkroom" is a new thing to a lot of people, but catching on strong as we realize how much flexibility is built into the files if you do it right. This book does a great job of showing you how to put the most into the image in-camera, and then how to push it even further.

Black and white photography presents different challenges than color photography. In Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop, photographers learn how to identify great opportunities for black and white photographs and how to turn those opportunities into stunning monochrome images they can be proud to display. From the Author: Sample Photos and Their Stories One vital element of good black and white photography is lighting and how the light affects your subjects. I believe that many of the black and white images that I shoot are light driven, meaning that many times I will see how the light and shadow are interacting with the subject in front of me, and will use the tones and contrast there to determine if it should be a color or black and white image. This can happen whether there is the bold contrast of big areas of light and shadow, or the subtle tones of gray, smoothly fading towards bright and dark areas. Pay attention to the shapes and textures of the scene in front of your camera, and start to engage your brain in trying to learn how the colors of real life will convert into tones and textures in monochrome. In your home, on a walk or even on your commute, begin to see the tones of light and dark all around you to help visualize how the contrast of the light is creating the emotional tone of the scenes in front of you. Ask yourself questions about the light always helps in visualizing-is this a bright or dark scene? Is the interaction of the light and dark areas of the scene hard and abrupt or is it soft and gradual? How does this light fit the scene? And finally' how does the light in the scene make me feel? Spend more time trying to visualize how light is creating the shape, texture and contrast in the scene in front of your camera and the feel that you are attempting to share in your black and white photographs, than worrying too much about a lot of technically perfect settings. Creative DSLR Photography: The ultimate creative workflow guide (Digital Workflow) Review

The book title suggests that DSLR users are the only readers that may find this book useful are DSLR users. While there is an emphasis towards that type of user, I think the strengths of this book are more in its discussions on composition and the artistic side of photography, and that can benefit all photographers.
That being said, this book is basic, but not necessarily in the best way for the novice photographer. In terms of the technical aspects of photography, I think this book, in being basic, accomplishes it in being a bit vague. Leaving out details as this book sometimes does, only makes some topics seem a bit vague and will leave the novice photographer a little more confused. The book seems written to the user who may have purchased a DSLR on a whim or to improve from their point and shoot cameras, yet it doesn't provide enough detail to really benefit that user.
I am a more advanced user, so I found the value to be in the aspects on composition. Those aspects are presented well, they are presented in a simplified manner, and they will benefit the novice user. The technical aspects discussed I think will be a bit more useful to a user with some technical understanding already, not because they will teach you something but more because they will reinforce what you already know with respect to the technical and linking it to the art.
The truth though becomes that there are many better books out there. The true novice photographer should go after a book like Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson or similar books. This book here, is the type you may be better off checking out at a library after you have a bit more background and understanding or if you need fresh new ideas.

101 Quick and Easy Secrets to Create Winning Photographs Review

In his book "101 Quick and easy secrets to create winning photographs" the Author Mathew Bamberg takes us around the world capturing day to day things using various techniques, taking the mundane shot and turning into a visual masterpiece. Bamberg does an outstanding job of describing the photo techniques that he employed as well as the technical aspects of the shot, the use of color, light and shadow, for ground object, background object etc.. Bamberg describes his thought process behind the decision he makes about the framing of the shot, whether to use aperture priority, shutter priority, type of lens etc.
The book is divided into 15 chapters:
Chapter 1 Making your photographs look 3D. This chapter describes how to use objects to give your photo some dimensionality using foreground and background objects.
Chapter 2:Painting with light. The chapter covers using available light vs. flash vs. reflected light
Chapter 3 Adding action to your frame. This chapter covers using long exposures. It also covers taking shots of people in motion and how to convey what they are doing through photography.
Chapter 4. Adding or subtracting shadow. This chapter covers how to use shadows to emphasize the subject as well as how to get rid of unwanted shadows.
Chapter 5. Making Art from architecture. This chap0ter is basically about photographing buildings in interesting ways.
Chapter 6. Creating mood shots using weather. This chapter is about using exposure compensation to bring out color. It's also about using black and white photography to set the mood.
Chapter 7 Beautifying with color. This is about finding color in the shot and then emphasizing it. Making the color jump off of the page.
Chapter 8. Breathing life into people. This chapter is about using the lens, colors they are wearing and the environments they are in to create a photograph.
Chapter 9. Making animal photos sharp and fun. In this chapter Bamberg shows us how to capture the essence of the animal. He really made these images stand out.
Chapter 10. Spicing up photos with lens flare, noise and other unusual effects. Here Bamberg talks about using the settings on your camera and lens to really bring out unusual effects whether is lens flare, distortion or long exposure.
Chapter 11. Composing with landscapes. Here Bamberg covers using focal lengths, aperture, shutter speeds and combining many different camera settings to achieve the perfect shot.
Chapter 12. Shaping up with symmetry. This chapter covers using lines to direct the viewers eye.
Chapter 13. Technical tango. Here Bamberg talks about what equipment and settings to use in different situations.
Chapter 14. Daytime, nighttime, anytime. Here Bamberg talks about using the settings on your camera to capture the brilliance of light and color. Any time.
Chapter 15. Back to the future. Simply said., how to photograph old things and bring visual life to them with color.This book serves as a multipurpose book. It can be used in the classroom and it can be used as reference material and it is very well suited for both.
The book is filled with beautiful photography. It's an easy read. What I really liked about this book is that it will be very easy for the novice photographer to understand and there is something here for the experienced photographer as well. Bamberg really captures the essence of photography in this book. Bamberg really makes the photos in this book come to life and he walks the reader through how to do this. Bamberg did an excellent job writing and editing this book as well. The points he makes are detailed but concise. The book flows very well from beginning to end and yes there are 101 very useful secrets here. This is worth 10 stars in a 5 star limitation.

Photography and the Art of Seeing: A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography Review

I bought "Photography and the Art of Seeing" knowing nothing about it. I had not even heard of the author, Freeman Patterson. I had a certain expectation based on current photography books of the same genre, but what I found is a book beyond compare.
I would recommend this book to any level of photographer with a desire to truly express themselves through their photography. You won't come away with a list of rules and instructions about when to apply them. Nor will you end up with a cheat sheet of camera settings that achieve particular effects. If you are open to it, however, you will learn new ways to look at, think about, understand, and portray the world you see through the lens of your camera; you will become more empowered to express yourself in your photography.
I was happily surprised that this book is more about photography than it is about the author. Certainly he includes many personal experiences to explain himself and his work, but he does so without the self-aggrandizing rhetoric of similar books. You really begin to feel as if you are part of his process, rather than someone he is trying to impress, as he describes his approach to his work.
And the photos! While they are exceptional, this is not a book to flip through, pause for the pictures, and then put on a shelf. Instead, it lives up to an important word in the subtitle, "workshop." You may never attend an expensive workshop with an accomplished photographer. But Patterson generously provides a workshop that includes intriguing, mind-expanding exercises all for the cost of this book.
Yes, I love this book! So much so that I've ordered two more of Patterson's books, and I can hardly wait to get started on them.

Digital Macro and Close-Up Photography For Dummies Review

Digital Macro & Close-Up Photography is a great book for learning how to capture close-up shots with your digital camera. I honestly can't think of anything this book leaves out when it comes to this subject. Everything from the correct equipment to shooting techniques is covered in easy to understand detail. Another great thing about this book is that it is full of color photographs that the reader can use for examples. I found these full-color examples and technique comparisons were really helpful in understanding the authors points.
Thomas Clark also reviews many macro lenses and other equipment to help the reader make an informed decision when it comes to buying the right equipment for macro photography. I will not list all of the specific chapters and topics since you have the ability to see the table of contents for the book on this very page. I will simply say that this book really helps the reader understand different macro photography techniques, something that most basic photography books neglect to cover.
I am merely an amateur photographer, so I will not attempt to get technical in this review. What I will say, is that from the point of view from someone with little experience and knowledge in this field, I found this book easy to understand and very helpful. I think that it is a great book which covers the subject in such a way that even the layman like myself can understand and grasp the concepts that the author explains in this book. Well organized and extremely helpful!! 5 Stars!

Microstock Money Shots: Turning Downloads into Dollars with Microstock Photography Review

I'm familiar with Ellen Boughn so curiosity got the best of me and I bought and read the book. It's a fast read, you can finish it in a day... partially because there is nothing in it that you won't see posted on the microstock sites and the multitude of blogs about microstock.
The blogs and the book have another thing in common too. They are both seeking to profit by convincing photographers to devalue their work. Ellen hopes to sell books by leading you to believe you can make a fortune licensing your work for 25 cents. That's right, a quarter... and one site licenses the work for a mere 14 cents. The blogs by convincing you of the same and then signing up to license your work for less that it costs you to park your car at a meter during a photoshoot and themselves making a referral commission off of any image you license.
One thing quite apparent in reading this is Ellen is VERY AWARE that the advice she is giving is misleading. For example, she mentions that most of the food photos shot for microstock look very unappetizing and that a food stylist with her full compliment of tricks is needed to make the food look good. Then she continues to say that you will not make enough from the image as microstock to cover the cost of the stylist!
This is true. And it is the way of microstock. Convince the photographer that if he only invested more into the shoot he would make a fortune... and knowing full well that he will not. There is a small handful of photographers who do well at microstock this way and they can be counted on the fingers of both hands. However based on some actual payout charts that were once available from iStock, the vast, vast, vast majority of contributors never license enough work in a year to reach the $100 payout threshold. The microstock sites profit from the work and the photographers who created the work get a goose egg. Nothing, zip, zero! As for those who are making big bucks at it, part of that success is that they are held up as poster boys to encourage others to sign up. Also, one has to wonder how much they would be making had they pursued revenue streams that paid what the work is worth!
Ellen sold out AND SHE KNOWS IT. Now she is asking you to do the same so she can profit from selling her own soul. Someone with her years of experience in the industry should be devoting her time to make the industry in which she earns her living a better place, not working to destroy it. And if she was a REAL expert, that is what she would be doing.
Before you buy this book, ask yourself some questions. Let's say you manage to license a photo 100 times on microstock. At a quarter each, that is a whopping total of $25. Doesn't even come close to covering production costs, or even the coffee brought in for the models. Now consider you had recieved what is still an unrealistically low price for your work of just $30 per license... sill way too low but now you are talking $3000 for the same work. Now ask yourself just how it is that someone who is creating an advertising campaign, putting out a magazine, or promoting a national or international product is unable to come up with $30 for a photo?
Is it your job to subsidize their business?
Ellen seems to think so. So much so that I actually had to wonder which of the microstock sites paid Ellen to write it. The book does more to make the lives of the image inspectors and microstock site owners easier than it will do to help you make money.
It is possible to make money at microstock, but the effort and cost involved does not result in a satisfactory return on investment. A photographer who manages to somehow make $25,000 a year on microstock would be making a good $250,000 to $500,000 per year had he put the same effort into landing work that paid fairly.
Save your money, invest it instead on a copy of "Best Business Practices for Photographers" by John Harrington and learn what your work is actually worth and how to get it. Join a professional association and learn how other successful photographers are actually making it work in this business. Ellen is preying on those who have a dream, but have not found the professional resources they need to make their dream a reality. Don't be her next sucker.
Ellen's book was good for a laugh and to see close up a slice of the cancer that is destroying photography. It now lines my bird cage.

Focus On Composing Photos: Focus on the Fundamentals (Focus On Series) (Focus on (Focal Press)) Review

My spouse used to be a professional photographer: He owned a photo studio in the 70s, worked as a darkroom manager in the 80s, and I won't tell you how many cameras we own. He's a serious "prosumer" these days and can spend hours on HDR and other fiddly stuff. However, he has been a photographer for so long that he can't always externalize his knowledge well enough to instruct me (not to mention the marital blurts, "Jeez, Esther, how could you _not_ see the lamp post coming out of his head?"). While my own photography skills have improved over the years, I long ago acknowledged that I am merely a snapshot photographer. But I want to be a *good* snapshot photographer. (Really, how *did* I fail to see that lamp post?)
Which is why I was glad to find Focus on Composing Photos among my Amazon Vine selections. In a series that promises "focus on the fundamentals," I hoped, it would help me do a better job as I capture the moments I most want to cherish. Without having to get serious.
Chapters are devoted to each element of composition, such as light, shadow, color; viewpoint and perspective; leading lines. Each chapter ends with an assignment, such as several To-Do items for Color. ("Pick a favorite color and spend a day photographing this color everywhere you encounter it. Look for your color's complementary and analogous colors to pair with it.") I'm tempted to say that the text offers "the least you need to know" about each of these subjects, but that implies a slapdash overview, while Peter Ensenberger goes into a bit more than that. Perhaps a better way to express this is that he doesn't try to tell you EVERYthing; just enough to get the point across. It's a good balance of theory and practical instruction.
I do wish he had more examples of "Don't do this" or "Compare these." The myriad examples (at least one on every other page) are very pretty, but I wish he'd showed, "Here's the image I think is composed well. Now compare it to this one, which broke the rules I just told you about the rule of thirds." There are a few of these, such a set of pictures showing marbles photographed at different focal lengths; I would like more.
This is a serious book. It doesn't have a lot of personal voice, in which the author makes you feel as if he's speaking right to you, standing at your elbow and suggesting, "Look over there." It doesn't try to charm you into knowing the material. If I were to take a community college class in photography it would be an excellent accompaniment. As it is, I'm slowly working my way through the book, trying to apply one bit of knowledge at a time. I haven't had any "Aha!" moments yet, but I expect they will come in time.

Photographing Nature: A photo workshop from Brooks Institute's top nature photography instructor Review

This is a wonderful and inspiring nature photography book for intermediate and advanced photographers. For everyone else it is a beautiful book that will probably get you interested in taking better nature pictures.
"Photographing Nature" contains outstanding nature photographs and the instructions for creating them. Ralph Clevenger describes the sometimes very expensive equipment used. He also recommends using a garbage bag for taking "wet belly" photographs, which is about a down to earth as any instructions could get.
I really like the author's answer to the moral question of manipulating the picture as opposed to recording the truth. He demonstrates his logic with a picture that has earned a great deal of money. It clearly shows the truth about icebergs with a composite photograph that would be impossible to make with the camera alone.
"Photographing Nature" covers composing seeing light, modifying the light when taking the picture, and altering the light digitally afterward. It covers composing using the 3D rule of thirds, and the natural reason why the rule of thirds works. It provides more technical information such as sources for determining the hyperfocal distance to focus for the maximum depth of field.
"Photographing Nature" provides guidance for taking nature photographs of different kinds and in different locations. It tells how and when to approach animals, and when not to disturb them. This is one great book for any photographer taking nature pictures, from insects to landscapes, whether in a back yard or on a trip to exotic locations. It is almost as much inspirational as educational.

I'm a SLR refugee from the 1960s, washed up on the digital shore, longingly thinking about how I need some new, simple ideas to rekindle my love affair with photography before I'm afraid to even think digital can't be for me. I want to fall in love with the experimenting I loved just out of college, in those psychedelic days, when my thinking was, anything could be a cool picture and my camera went everywhere with me like a reason to stare with a smile. Soon after starting Shutter Speed, I knew I had become bored with an interest I really hadn't understood as well as I thought. I knew about how to freeze the action of some object and put some "interesting blur" on speedy things, but it never occurred to me why my camera had so many shutter speeds.
