Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D Digital Field Guide (Digital Field Guides) Review

At the time of this writing, there are only two books about the Canon T3i available on Amazon. With both (Kindle editions) being sold at $9.99, I would have to say that the Digital Field Guide is the MUCH better deal. It's clear, concise, well-illustrated. It gives examples, and provides photos for better understanding of concepts. You won't need to go back and forth between this and the manufacturer's manual because this book tells you everything you need to know. If this had been available earlier (I believe it came out just a few days ago!), I might have ended up buying and reading this one first. I probably wouldn't have needed to search for anything more. Highly recommended, especially for the DSLR novice who wants a great book that will tell you everything!

Digital Photography For Dummies Review

Digital Photography for Dummies is the first Dummies book I have read. It is fully updated and revised now in FULL COLOR.
I can't imagine understanding all about RGB, CYMK and other colorful acronyms in chapter 2 if the diagrams were in black and white, color speaks volumes.
Digital Photography for Dummies shows you anything and everything you need to know about Digital Photography.
There are 16 chapters divided into 5 parts.
Covers understanding the differences between digital cameras and film cameras, also the pros and cons of digital photography.
It also gets involved with color, resolution and image size, some nice diagrams of RGB Channels, nice section of pixels and print quality, what's the difference in 300ppi, 150ppi, 72ppi, if you didn't know you do now.
Take a look at the shutter and aperture in a traditional film camera, worth a look.
Comparing SLR's and point-and-shoot cameras, also covers digital cameras removable media types.
A great tip on using non digital lenses with a digital body (Not all cameras do this) a great tip.
It also takes a look at transferring images to your computer, imaging software.
Making initial set up decisions, involves files, format understanding quality and picture size settings, this book really gets to grips with digital characteristics of your camera, resolution, white balance options, using flash, tweaking exposure.
Do I use flash or not? Here is the answer.
A blurry image is it poor focusing, or an unsteady hand? How you hold the camera is very important.
Covers capturing action shots, panoramas, zooming and camera noise, also camera raw, transferring files via camera to computer.
A good section on digital photography, choosing a printer, inkjet or laser. Choosing paper, the paper you choose can make your images have a completely different effect.
Using your photo's on the web, preparing your pictures for the screen. Making changes to part of a picture, why and when.
A good glossary in the back explains all those technical words.
I liked the use of the icons throughout the book, bringing important information to your attention.
Conclusion:
This is a very good book for readers who are new to digital photography. Advanced users may know most of the information but again the book is for Dummies.
Full of great information may be some information you will never need, but the information is better in than left out.
Diagrams are clear and clean, it's also nice to see screen shots from windows machines.
You don't get a CD with the book, bet you don't need one.
I give this book five (5) out of five (5).

Nikon D3000 Digital Field Guide Review

Recently got a D3000, although the manual explained the camera, the D3000 Digital Field Guide completely surpassed the manual and any other book that I have read about DSLR's. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a D3000, it should be mandatory :) The book goes into great detail about the different settings that can be used with the camera, how to achieve certain photos and also has a glossary in the back if you don't understand some of the photography words like me. The book also comes with a gray card and color checker and explains how to use it and the reasoning behind it. As a new mother I wanted to have professional looking photos of my baby and now I do, I didn't have to pay someone else to achieve it either! Another great thing about the book is the size, you can take it with you on your photo taking adventures, it is easy to flip through and find which settings you should use to take amazing photos in any situation. Overall the book gets you ready and comfortable with your D3000. After reading it, you have the sense of excitement about taking photos, because you actually know what you are doing instead of just taking snapshots.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1 and 2 (Includes The Digital Photography Book Volume 1 and The Digital Photography Book Volume 2) Review

Okay, this is perhaps the best venue to compare the two volumes.
So, in a nutshell... if you have the budget for just one, get volume 2.
Vol 2 is perhaps three times stronger, and Scott Kelby repeats most tips that was said in Vol. 1 anyway.
In Vol 2 reflectors, diffusers, softboxes are discussed. In volume 1, pages are somehow wasted on superficial, commonsensical things like the purpose of lens hoods.
The quality of pictures are likewise better in volume 2.
The few solids that I got in vol 1 are Photoshop settings (values to input for sharpness) and the weblinks especially created to supplement the one page lessons; in volume 2, the tips on building up a studio from scratch, the great use of flash, and 'photo recipes' are truly superb.
But if you are really a beginner, budding photographer, entirely new to dslr perhaps, then these two combined in one set is perfect. The one-point-lesson format is a noble idea and they really would help!
There are still plenty of topics for Volume 3, such as how to wield the picture styles embedded (color saturation), and illustration on the differences between white balance, more techniques applicable to studios, panning, more urban travel photography, more on flash work,... so Im awaiting that one as well (Scott says it will be out next year).

Fine Art Photography High Dynamic Range: Realism, Superrealism, and Image Optimization for Serious Novices to Advanced Di Review

Tony Sweet has long been admired for his imaginative approach to photography. In this book he turns his attention to HDR processing.
Although the book can be studied as a lovely portfolio, I found that Sweet's discussion of how he processed each image (or since this is HDR photography, series of images) added to my knowledge of this subject. Sweet discusses the use of two different pieces of software: HDR Soft's Photomatix and Nik's HDR Efex Pro. His discussions of each piece of software appear similar at first, but close examination shows a slight variation. For Photomatix he first describes the software itself, including a brief description of the effect of each slider. (His description of each of the functions is just different enough from the description the software itself provides when one rolls over a particular control to provide additional insights into its purpose.) He then provides a number of photographs, indicating in a chart the settings that he has changed from the default with his reason for the change. For example, for a particular picture, he states "Saturation: Default is 70, Set to 100 to add color to a very drab scene." Next he discusses the post-HDR processing that he used on the image, relying heavily on plug-ins like Nik Color Efex Pro Tonal Contrast and Viveza. Each example includes a film strip of the images captured, the picture as it emerges from Photomatix and a large picture of the image after post-HDR processing.
For HDR Efex Pro he changes his methodology a bit, using a narrative form rather than a chart of the changes that he made to the software default. I found this approach a little harder to understand, but that may have been because of my experience with Photomatix. (I was unable to follow his efforts as well as I would have liked because I was unable to successfully install the trial version of HDR Efex Pro on my Windows 7-64 bit machine; try the trial version before buying the software.) Even though the narrative alone did not seem as effective as the chart of changes, it should still prove useful in learning to use this software.
Sweet covers the full range of outcome from realistic to slightly surrealistic, but not all out surrealistic. His main emphasis in Photomatix is on Details Enhancer although there is an image processed in Exposure Fusion. Individuals who feared that the Details Enhancer could not provide realistic images should be able to achieve that goal after reading the book and may find that that Detail Enhancer offers a degree of control not found in Exposure Fusion.
The combination of the basic description of a function and the changes made, with an explanation of the reasons for the change worked for me. For example I never fully realized how the Photomatix microcontrast slider brought out details. As a result of his discussion about using Color Efex Pro Tonal Contrast, I decided to try that plug-in and now I am a confirmed believer.
The only thing I wish the book provided was a way to download a few of the images to follow along with the process described in the book, but even without this feature I found this book extremely helpful in honing my HDR skills. Even experienced HDR photographers may benefit from reading this book.

Nikon D60 Digital Field Guide Review

I received the guide several weeks ago and have been using it ever since. I really like the fact that it is so well put together and easy to use. I am a novice to dSLR cameras having used a point and shoot forever. This guide has helped me so much I had to reccomend it to beginners like me, but also from my review of it I will be using it a long time to come. The information for using all the settings on the camera and learning the manual setting has been wonderful. I was really filled with anxiety at the prospect of using anything but auto. I jumped right in with fireworks and haven't looked back! I couldn't beleive fireworks was listed in the index and I took some great shots. I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can and this is a great tool for anyone. The color examples on different shots really help you see the possibilities. Everything you need to know is in this guide, from lighting, to lenses. I don't even use the manual that came with my camera. The guide fits right into my case and is getting a workout. My camera really feels like a part of me now thanks to this guidebook instead of some foreign object. Everthing is becoming second nature and I couldn't be happier! HK

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3 Review

In the usual Scott Kelby style he write these books as a collection of pointers to a friend photographer. Every page in all three books are written with one pointer or tip on each page. As Scott writes in the prelude:
"If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You would say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."
This being said, this also means that he doesn't dwell deeply within each tip or pointer explaining _why_ everything works as it does. This is for the reader to find out researching the topic further in other reference books.
Surprisingly to me, this works very well! I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and I would say that I have become a much better photographer reading through all the tips.
Book one is quite general in topic, spanning from how to create really sharp photos to a description of wedding photography. This book is, according to me, a must have in every digital photographers bookshelf. This book is also clearly aimed at beginner photographers.
Coming to book 2 and 3 they differ a bit, especially of how they are written. These books also have the 'pointer and tip' layout, but more detailed information can be found here. Book 2 for example describe thoroughly which gear to use when using flash and how to set up your mini-studio and book three goes even further on how to shoot specific subjects.
This box set offer any digital photographer a helicopter view of how to use your digital camera in the best way to get 'professional' photos. Primarily these books - as all Scott Kelby books - offer small insights of what to think about when shooting digital photos. Kelby also does this with a huge amount of humor, making all his books a joy to read.

Photographer's Guide to the Panasonic Lumix LX5: Getting the Most from Panasonic's Advanced Digital Camera Review

I haven't finished the book yet but so far the author does a great job. Just wanted people interested in this to know that they have the option of downloading this on the website in pdf form for less than half the price. So if you have a tablet or are ok with reading this on your computer you can get it asap and for less.

Photographer's Guide to the Panasonic Lumix LX5: Getting the Most from Panasonic's Advanced Digital Camera Overview

Photographer's Guide to the Panasonic Lumix LX5: Getting the Most from Panasonic's Advanced Digital Camera is the third book in a series by Alexander S. White. His previous guides to the Leica D-Lux 4 and Panasonic Lumix LX3 were extremely well received by enthusiasts searching for comprehensive books that explain the features and operation of some of the most sophisticated compact digital cameras being sold today. The current book is a detailed resource, illustrated by more than 150 color photographs, that covers all operations, menus, and controls of the Panasonic Lumix LX5, the newest in a line of highly sophisticated, yet very portable cameras that are equipped with full manual controls as well as advanced digital technology. The book provides detailed guidance to beginning, intermediate, and more experienced photographers in plain English. The photographs illustrate the camera's menus and controls, and provide examples of many of the camera's shooting modes and special effects. For those who find the documentation provided by the camera's manufacturer to be hard to read and difficult to understand, this book fills an information gap and serves as a single source of information to let the photographer derive the maximum benefit from his or her Panasonic Lumix LX5 camera.

Creative Shutter Speed: Master the Art of Motion Capture Review

Beginning right on the cover, Creative Shutter Speed invites, instructs, entertains, and sets the stage for rapid progress with personal photography that can quickly assist almost any photographer to raise their level of satisfaction with exciting pictures and even might transform simple camera shots into art form. Derric Doeffinger is an accomplished, published, and engaging career instructor in maximizing the potential of cameras and photographers. Personal results come quickly from following the entertaining, sometimes humorous, always engagingly simple suggestions from an obvious master who liberally appoints his book with tremendous photos the reader is confidentially told and completely aware of exactly how the magic was created. Derek has a voice that is akin to your friendly next-door neighbor confessing his photography adventures and aspirations; yet he obviously has achieved success far beyond amateur experimentation. The pictures made me think, "I can do some of this! I might even develop some artistic scenes...easily, results right away!"
I'm a SLR refugee from the 1960s, washed up on the digital shore, longingly thinking about how I need some new, simple ideas to rekindle my love affair with photography before I'm afraid to even think digital can't be for me. I want to fall in love with the experimenting I loved just out of college, in those psychedelic days, when my thinking was, anything could be a cool picture and my camera went everywhere with me like a reason to stare with a smile. Soon after starting Shutter Speed, I knew I had become bored with an interest I really hadn't understood as well as I thought. I knew about how to freeze the action of some object and put some "interesting blur" on speedy things, but it never occurred to me why my camera had so many shutter speeds. I had a ten-speed bike and, like my bike, I just skipped many of the gears dimly aware each might actually have a specific application. The shutter speed control never interested me much beyond, "OK. I think I know about that." I never really was creative with it at all. The piece,"Evaluating pictures as you take them," suddenly snapped me into the twenty first century. Derek continually, gently and with wry humor at times, reminds us about the great versatility of the equipment we have, and in my case, never thought about in terms of creativity literally instantly available and never used. I was looking out of my camera too much and not looking at my camera with understanding enough. It was always about the right image, not about working some simple adjustments to create art from any image. This is just what I needed and I expect a new generation of digital aficionados will concur.
Creative Shutter speed is the yellow brick road to follow to get me to the destination of happy romance with my camera. I am assured over and over again I do not travel alone and can take heart because I don't even need a highly evolved brain if I listen to Derek and laugh along with his coaching. I even thought that I could come away from this experience with some work that people would enjoy as well as personally learn much more about the camera I thought I knew and had grown bored with. This is a complete, detailed, precise step-by-step narration, including historical asides that have left me feeling a level of professional preparation I've not run into in a single book. The helpful glossary actually assisted me in understanding some of the necessary terms that are used. Like a carefully orchestrated stop action photo, each component of this shutter speed artistry is sharp, clear and you can't wait to get into motion with that camera. Yeah, I've made some exciting pictures and I'm in love.

Samsung NV10 10.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom with Advance Shake Reduction Review

I am frankly a little puzzed by others' comments about the image quality of this camera. I have shot digital exclusively since 1999 and this is by far the best point-and-shoot I have owned. I usually shoot with a Canon 5D or 1DS Mark II and this little NV10 holds up really well against these and certainly beats all the compact cameras I have owned (Canon, Casio, Sony, Contax). I have printed 16"x20" prints from the NV10 after almost no editing in Photoshop CS2. There is a little noise (I shoot the NV10 at ISO 100) and a minor application of Noise Ninja's filter removes any noticeable noise. It is possible that there are manufacturing irregularities that cause one camera to be different from another. If this is the case and yours seems very noisy, send it back and exchange it for another. I took this camera to India for a week and I couldn't pry it out of my wife's hands - she loved the size, responsiveness, image quality, exposure and ease of use.

Leica 10715 M9 "Titan" Set Digital Camera Review

In my circle of friends, we're always trying to out do each other in every aspect of our lives whether it be who can get the hottest women or who bought the most hotels in Monopoly. When my buddies took up photography, naturally, I must also take it up. It started out innocent, a group of friends hanging out shooting pictures, show boating their Canons and Nikons. If one of us had a nice midrange, the other had to have a highend and another would get the flagship models even though none of us were good at it. Finally, someone in the group had the audacity to max out their credit cards on a Hasselblad H4D. Being that your junk is only as big as your pride (by junk, I mean penis), I sold my mobile home, my car, one of my daughters, and a whole lot of garage sales later, I got my hands on this baby, the Leica M9 Titan. Let me tell you something something, I really do suck at photography, but with this range finder, I was shooting pictures comparable to Peter Lik and the likes. No need to know anything about aparature (sp?), shutter speed or IOS or any of that fancy smanchie stuff, just point and shoot and marvel at the crisp quality and creamy bokeh!
Unfortunately, my wife took what's left of our children and is staying at her mom's (my mother in-law) after the bank took the rest of our stuff. No matter, as long as I have this pair of pants I've been wearing for the last couple months, my trusty camera and my bottles of Xanax and Cialis, I'm content poppin' pills and snappin' pics. I may not have anything to live for anymore but "my camera is still nicer than yours."

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi/400D For Dummies Review

I was given a Canon Rebel XTi as a Mother's Day gift. I absolutely love the camera but the manual modes were way over my head! When I received the book I began reading chapter by chapter. It is set up very simply & easy to follow. I went from not being able to even understand manual modes to taking gorgeous photos within minutes! The f-stops, shutter speed, & ISO were explained in a way that just made it "click" in my head. Great book!
