Pandigital PANTV1512 15.6-Inch Kitchen Technology Center Digital Picture Frame Review

My in laws got one and had NO idea how to use it. They used as a TV only until I came over. lol
Adding recipes isnt very tech friendly. You must type your recipes in mspaint or another photo editing program and save them as jpgs. you can then add them to the bon-apetite folder on the actual unit by hooking up usb cable to laptop\desktop. your computer will see a bunch of removable drives. You then find the recipe folders. transfer the jpgs to the bonapetite folder, then you can move them to their correct folder as favorites (soups, entrees, etc). You have to name them in the correct way too. they start from 001 to 100. When you add the jpg you must name it in the right # sequence. This is the only way i could get it to work. You can also do screenshots of [...]or other cooking websites, save as jpeg and then transfer them.
You will also need external speakers because the sound sucks.
The wireless is just to stream picasa pictures.. thats it. You have to install a yahoo widget to access the ubnit to transfer pics directly to it. Better off to do everything via usb.
The manual was garbage. I am a very experienced techie and it took me a couple hours to setup all the features.
very cool idea, but i dont think they got it right the first time. Ill probably still buy one... but the average computer user wont be able to use all the features without help imo

Sunpak 3 Inch Pocket Digital Photo Frame (Color: Black) Review

I needed a battery operated display for outdoors, and there aren't many choices. This was low enough cost to be worth a try, and the small screen was adequate for my needs.
Pluses:
-- It accepts SDHC (no adapter needed) as well as SD and MMC memory cards.
-- Screen is reasonably bright and readily viewable outside. Brightness and contrast are adjustable. Also has saturation and limited hue adjustments, but for me the defaults were pretty good.
-- Screen colors are good, and resolution (320x240 pixels) is adequate for the small size (2.0 x 2.75 inches). The screen is slightly larger than the size of many displays on recent model digital cameras, although of lower resolution than most.
Minuses:
-- Processor is slooooooowwwwwwww. Fastest photo to photo speed is about 8 seconds for 4 MB JPGs; might be faster with smaller JPGs, but I didn't try. Typically takes a second or two before it responds to any command button inputs --- really gets maddening.
-- You need to have a memory card in the display with JPG photos before you can even access the setup and control menus. I sent the first unit back because I thought I couldn't access the menus. (Support number for Sunpak on J&R site is incorrect - I didn't want to order oriental food ;>) ).
-- Atrocious user manual. Poor organization (be sure to read through it ALL before operating). Very minimal, and skips a lot.
-- Poor user interface. At least for me, not at all intuitive, although part of it is the long delays between individual operations. Mulitple sequences to do things that should take one or two steps at most.
-- Poor protection of the LCD screen. Can gently press the screen and see the display warp. This would be less important for an indoor, desktop display --- but this portable, battery-operated one should be expected to get a lot of handling.
-- Can't get into the setup menu when attached to USB port.
-- J&R, like many of the New York camera and electronics outfits, apparently likes to reuse returned equipment. In my case, I got an opened, used unit with fingerprints after sending back the first one for replacement(NOT the same unit I sent back; I make a slight mark in an unobtrusive area whenever I return items for replacement).
-- No battery charge indicator, either when charging or when in use.
-- Can only charge from a USB port. On a positive note, it seems to charge fully in about 2 hours.
-- Rated for 90 minutes of display time per charge, which you might get if you ratchet the brightness down. I get about 60 minutes.
-- Screen seems to be optimized for viewing about 30 degrees above the screen, presumably for desktop viewing. Optimal viewing angle very limited vertically; much better horizontally.
-- Many slow steps to access simple functions like zooming, and equally difficult to get out of that mode. I still can't figure out how to pan a zoomed image vertically.
-- Given the vulnerability of the screen, the included soft sided carrying bag should be hard-sided. Should also have room for the USB connector.
Bottomline: I decided to keep it, but just barely. Unless, like me, you really need a portable display, I'd wait for a couple revisions or other competing models. Things I'd look for are a more rugged design, slightly larger display, ability to use AA or AAA rechargeables, cleaner user interface, and faster processing. Might be a while. Manufacturers seems to be going in the other direction, removing the battery powered units from their lineups.
