Nikon D90 Digital Field Guide Review

I purchased my D90 three months ago but struggled some with the manual that ships with the camera. Since buying this book, it has opened up a whole new world to me. It is very easy to read and well organized. In just a few hours reading the book and apply the techniqes as I wqent along, I was experimenting with various white balance settings, using picture controls, and taking pictures using the "M" (Manual) mode effectively. If you couple this book with Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure", you will benefit from the technical and basic photo making techniques of this book and the creative elements of Bryan's book. You will be well on your way to enjoying digital photography, particularly if you are rlatively new to it as I am. Enjoy!

Nikon D90: The Expanded Guide Review

This is a handy, easy to read first step beyond the owner's manual. One of the things I like most about this book is the photos are beautiful. I have read several photography books that had worthwhile advice, but mediocre photos, which really reduces the credibility of the book. He has many photos that I would purchase if they were for sale in a gallery.
In the functions chapter, which is 88 pages long, and the section that I refer back to the most, he has a brief description of each of the camera's functions. I have referred to this section of the manual repeatedly. When I travel, I carry it in my suitcase. I hope to get to the point where I don't need it anymore, but I'm not quite there.
My one complaint with the book is, in the section on histograms, he says "Learning to interpret the histogram is key to achieving the best results with the D90." But he doesn't explain the histogram at all! Granted, the section on histograms is only 3 paragraphs long, but he could have at least said something like the right side represents the lightness of the image, the left the darkness, and if the hills in your histogram are being clipped off on either side, you are over or under exposing your image.
I was amused with his section on composition where he calls the Rule of Thirds the deadliest of all. If you read anything about photography you will learn about the rule of thirds, where you sort of picture a tic-tac-toe over the image or composition and line an important element up with the intersection of the lines. I was thrilled to hear a professional bash it.
He also has a flash, close-up, movies (which I don't intend to use my camera for so I skipped it), lenses, accessories, connection and care.
For someone like me who is studying photography, this is a wonderful book.

David Busch's Nikon D90 Guide to Digital SLR Photography Review

I'm only halfway through reading this 392 page book, and I've already learned twice as much about my D90 as I did from the other guide I foolishly bought while waiting for this one. It's filled with information I couldn't find anywhere else, including wise advice on using all the features of this great camera.
I bought my Nikon D90 primarily as a backup to my D300, and it remained in that role for several months because I didn't really know how to use it. The other book I got explained all the buttons and dials, but didn't provide the kind of in depth information I wanted on using the D90's features. I was very pleased with Busch's D300 book, and so got this one when it became available. What an eye-opener. After reading through Chapter 4 I can hardly wait to get out shooting again, as I didn't realize just how much I can do with this camera. I've learned that it's a lot like my D300 in many ways, but with some nice new features that I can apply to my work.
The author devotes the first three chapters to introducing the camera, its controls, and menus, explaining how and why you should make each setting. Later chapters describe techniques for optimizing exposure, using the D90's autofocus features, and how to work with electronic flash. This book had the best explanation of using the Nikon GP-1 geotagging unit that I've seen. While it doesn't spell out all the ways you can actually use GPS information, it provides enough detail that you can get a feel for it and decide for yourself whether you want to invest in this accessory.
I found the 30-page updated explanation and evaluation of Nikon brand lenses extremely valuable. No other book goes into so much detail on this important topic. Despite the Nikon D90's bargain price, it's a fairly advanced camera, and really deserves a book like this one, which starts off simply and then digs deep to offer the kind of information we really need to take better pictures.
