Flash Techniques for Macro and Close-Up Photography: A Guide for Digital Photographers Review

If you, like me, are in the Macro photography field, then make you a big favor and don't waste your money with this book. I have dozens of photography books but this one is the worst of them all. It shows a bunch of photos of a couple giving a course to students, shows very bad flash techniques and doesn't even mention the most used flash systems for macro photography like Flash Rings, SpeedLite, SpeedLight, Twin Lite, etc. just a bunch of flash diffusers. The macro photos are pathetic and many of them are "really" out of focus with a legend that says that you can make them to suggest a subject... what was that? I really regret to have spent my money on this crap. Really a bad bad book.

Scott Kelby's books are a must have for both beginner and advanced professionals. They are easy to read, very conversational, and the information is second to none. I have read both of these books several times and have learned so many fantastic tips to get to the next level in my photography career. As a beginning professional I have referenced these techniques many times over and my photographs have improved 100%.
This is a fabulous gift for the photographer on your list and will be used over and over.
Scott Kelby has a wonderful sense of humor - he really is funny. You won't be bored reading and learning from Scott like some techno bordom books out there. He makes it easy in plain english.
They probably won't be suitable for someone who is a stiff and has no personality.

I just received my copy of "Your Camera Loves You - Learn to Love it Back" today. What a fantastic resource! It's tailored to any skill level, but it's especially useful for someone like me who is a total novice at photography. I don't know how to do much beyond automatic mode, and this makes it easy to significantly improve my photo-taking skills without slogging through my Canon SLR's manual, with all of its dull, tiny, black and white print. Author Khara Plicanic writes in a fun, easy-to-understand and digest manner; she really "gets" what the average person needs out of a photography resource. The Digital SLR Expert Portrait Photography Review

My first thought on getting Amazon's promo email for this book is that it is probably redundant over most portrait technique books. This suspicion is heightened by the list of subjects covered in the editorial review, none of which seems unique to digital SLRs, the supposed focus of the book.
BUT WAIT - there is one subject listed I've never, ever seen covered by another book: "weeding photography."
So if you aspire to shoot for the Smith & Hawkins catalog, this is the book for you!

Magic Lantern Guides: Canon Powershot G10 Review

I gave this guide 5 stars because I found it to be a godsend. I'm very new to digital photography and bought my G10 a couple of months ago. I found the Canon manual very difficult and uninspiring. I then ordered this new G10 guide by Jason Schneider. When it arrived I felt like I was delivered from techie hell. It gives me an appreciation for the truly outstanding camera I blew my budget for. The approach is rational, the information is accurate, and the experience of reading this guide is pleasant. I brought this manual on a recent vacation and learned as I snapped away. I would encourage anyone to order this book as the first accessory for their Canon G10.

This memory photo album is a great buy & very nice with the suede cover & the photo slot on the front cover. I use these 4x6 inch albums for all my dogs from birth throughout their years. The price is a bargain & I can't find these in the local stores.

I thought that my photographically-inclined high school kid could get something out of this book, but my husband and I have both found ourselves referring to it in our professional life. Beautiful examples and very cleanly-discussed direction. I really enjoy the tone of the author and the sheer volume of photos to learn from is impressive. "The digital darkroom" is a new thing to a lot of people, but catching on strong as we realize how much flexibility is built into the files if you do it right. This book does a great job of showing you how to put the most into the image in-camera, and then how to push it even further.

Black and white photography presents different challenges than color photography. In Black and White Digital Photography Photo Workshop, photographers learn how to identify great opportunities for black and white photographs and how to turn those opportunities into stunning monochrome images they can be proud to display. From the Author: Sample Photos and Their Stories One vital element of good black and white photography is lighting and how the light affects your subjects. I believe that many of the black and white images that I shoot are light driven, meaning that many times I will see how the light and shadow are interacting with the subject in front of me, and will use the tones and contrast there to determine if it should be a color or black and white image. This can happen whether there is the bold contrast of big areas of light and shadow, or the subtle tones of gray, smoothly fading towards bright and dark areas. Pay attention to the shapes and textures of the scene in front of your camera, and start to engage your brain in trying to learn how the colors of real life will convert into tones and textures in monochrome. In your home, on a walk or even on your commute, begin to see the tones of light and dark all around you to help visualize how the contrast of the light is creating the emotional tone of the scenes in front of you. Ask yourself questions about the light always helps in visualizing-is this a bright or dark scene? Is the interaction of the light and dark areas of the scene hard and abrupt or is it soft and gradual? How does this light fit the scene? And finally' how does the light in the scene make me feel? Spend more time trying to visualize how light is creating the shape, texture and contrast in the scene in front of your camera and the feel that you are attempting to share in your black and white photographs, than worrying too much about a lot of technically perfect settings. Imparting the feel and emotion of the scene in front of you will be far more impactful to the viewer than making sure you had just the right f/stop. Commuter(see story below)

Mastering Digital Wedding Photography Review

I generally like books from the Thomson's digital photography series. Their books are typically lucid, well illustrated, and informative. Karney's book fits well into the Thomson series. He brings his expert, professional knowledge to the craft of wedding photography, focusing primarily on the technical aspects of the profession.
But keep in mind Karney's book is a general guide about wedding photography. If you already have such a book, you probably won't learn too much different in this one. He introduces the basics of choosing camera and software related equipment, setting up and carrying out a wedding shoot, and processing the photos after you've shot the wedding.
Specific chapters include: Equipment Matters, Computers and Software (main focus on PC and Windows users. No Mac examples present), Setting Up a Website, Getting Ready for the Big Day, Making Creative and Fun (this section could be expanded), and Proofing, Selling, and Printing.
He primarily shares and explains the tools he uses, such as iView Media Pro iView MediaPro 3 (Win/Mac) and Photodex ProShow. He doesn't delve into the latest popular software like Adobe Lightroom Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 Win/Mac or Apple's Aperture Apple Aperture 1.5. But the workflow process he introduces could apply to almost any digital management system.
The book is well illustrated and even contains a few useful camera tutorials that every photography should either know about or learn. In fact, it would be great to see Karney write an entire book of these types of tutorials.
Cons: The book is lacking in a few areas. I felt he should have spent more time on photo technique and style. You will certainly need to check out other books on this subject. And many of the photos included in the book, while very nice, don't always illustrate the points he's making on a particular page. For example, all the tutorials could have used photos to illustrate what he is instructing readers to do. I also think he could have included more about how Photoshop actions useful to wedding photographers. PS actions are huge time savers for anyone in the business. And finally, the business aspects wedding photography are not well introduced in this book, but again you can find more information in other books about this topic. Check out Best Business Practices for Photographers
Overall, though, the book is one of many that a serious beginning photographer should read. I've read better ones than this, but I do appreciate the information and experience Karney shares in his book. I highly suggest getting this or a similar book if you're just starting out in the profession and you're looking for ideas and suggestions from a pro.

Rick Sammon's Digital Photography Secrets Review

I have no idea what the people who rated this book as 5 stars are talking about. I have used Amazon since the website was open this will be only the second book I ever returned!
This book is ONLY good if you have purchased your first digital camera and need some introduction to digital photography after you have read the manual with the camera -- for anyone else -- it is a joke!
Most of the book is used to help sell Canon or Westcott equipment. Most of the supposed secrets are 5 sentences or less with no real substance.
The DVD is mostly pointless and the paragraph intro to the DVD is basically trying to sell you his other DVDs. I have seen reviews of this book in photo magazines and everyone must be on lets make Rick Sammon's money band wagon because the information listed in this book is fairly useless to anyone outside of a pure novice.
I cannot tell you how dissappointed I am in this book -- it puts me off to anything else he may produce or write.
The secret of this book is there are no real secrets and fool and his money are soon parted!

Self-Portrait Photography: The Ultimate in Personal Expression Review

I approached this book with trepidation, fearing an exercise in narcissism and self indulgence. The fact that the author called herself "Miss Aniela" did nothing to allay my fears. Instead I found a delightful examination of a photographic genre that I had never explored.
The book is a combination of portfolio and instruction manual. Each teaching point is laid out on a two, or occasionally four, page spread, with text and pictures of and by the author. The text ranges from introductory matters like choosing a camera, through posing and post-processing to marketing. There is also a section showcasing the work of eight other self-portrait artists.
Dybisz's photographs are quite wonderful. One might expect self-portraits to be an exploration of the photographer's view of herself, and at least when she started, the images were. As she began to get more involved though, she seems to have pushed beyond herself into experimenting with a wide variety of photographic techniques, and did so successfully. Her pictures usually are quite dramatic, often featuring lush lighting, and frequently consisting of collages of two or more images of herself. Although I frequently felt these pictures had a meaning that I couldn't deduce, they were still a pleasure to examine.
I suspect that the instruction might have been a publisher's requirement for better marketing. In most cases I find such material to be superficial. This text certainly was at a simple level, although it did point out the special requirements of self-portraiture. New photographers may get an introduction to photographic ideas and even the more experienced may get an idea or two. But aside from that, the author's style has a youthful enthusiasm that makes it delightful to read. Most of the subjects covered could fill a book on their own.
The chapters on the other artists worked well. Often, this type of material isn't substantial enough to give the reader a feel for the work. Here there are enough images to see what the photographer is doing and the text combining Dybisz's introduction and the photographers own words really provided insights.
Even if you don't plan to do any self-portraiture, this book will be interesting and even fun. For myself, I've decided its time to tray at least a few simple self-portraits.

Author Barbara Brundage, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is intended to make learning Elements easier by avoiding technical jargon as much as possible, and explaining why and when you'll want to use certain features in the program.
Brundage, begins by showing you how to navigate Elements' slightly confusing layout and mishmash of programs within programs. Then, the author covers how to get photos into Elements, the basics of organizing them, and how to open files and create new images from scratch; as well as, how to save and back up your images. Next, She explains how to rotate and crop your photos, and includes a primer on that most important digital imaging concept--resolution. The author then shows you how to use the Quick Fix window to dramatically improve your photos. She continues by covering two key concepts that you'll use throughout the book. Then, the author shows you how to make basic corrections, such as exposure, color adjustments, sharpening , and removing dust and scratches. Next, she covers topics unique to people who use digital cameras, like RAW conversion and batch processing your photos. The author then moves on to some more sophisticated fixes, like changing the light, using the clone stamp to make repairs, making your photos more lively with hue/saturation and changing the colors in an image. She continues by covering how to convert your photos to black and white, and tinting and recoloring black and white photos. Then, she shows you how to use the Elements' Photomerge feature to create multiphoto panoramas and to make perspective corrections to your images. Next, the author covers how to paint your photos and draw shapes, use filters and effects to create a more artistic look and add type to your images. Then she shows you how to get the most out of your printer, how to create images for the Web and email, how to make slideshows and Web Galleries with your photos, and all the fun projects you can create with Elements 5. Finally, she looks at information about using a .graphics tablet in Elements and some resources for after you've finished this book.
You'll also find tutorials throughout this most excellent book that refer to files you can download from the missing manual web site, so you can practice the techniques you're reading about. More importantly, this book assumes you know how to perform basic activities on your computer, like clicking and double-clicking your mouse and dragging objects onscreen.

Canon EOS Digital Photography Photo Workshop Review

This is a pretty good comprehensive book about Canon cameras, lenses, speed flashes and accessories. If you're a frequent buyer of Canon equipment or if you looking to build a Canon system, this book will answer many questions you might have, including some information about Canon's digital processing software that comes with their cameras. Some parts of the book may be too technical for beginners, and I would not recommend this book for those looking for detail information about taking quality photos. This book is more for learning the technical side of photography, helping you understand camera settings, functions, and differences between the various camera and lens models that Canon offers. The book does not cover the recent Canon models--the Canon 50D and the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The writing in this book is very accessible, and includes assignments/exercises that reflect information presented each chapter. The included video tutorials (not presented by the author, but by another photographer) on a CD-ROM, included with the book, seemed okay, but I think the tutorials are little too fast paced, glossing over techniques rather than going into depth on various topics. The ending chapters of the book provide a nice list of online resources, a glossary of digital photography terms, and an index for quick referencing. The companion website for the book is also useful.

Creative DSLR Photography: The ultimate creative workflow guide (Digital Workflow) Review

The book title suggests that DSLR users are the only readers that may find this book useful are DSLR users. While there is an emphasis towards that type of user, I think the strengths of this book are more in its discussions on composition and the artistic side of photography, and that can benefit all photographers.
That being said, this book is basic, but not necessarily in the best way for the novice photographer. In terms of the technical aspects of photography, I think this book, in being basic, accomplishes it in being a bit vague. Leaving out details as this book sometimes does, only makes some topics seem a bit vague and will leave the novice photographer a little more confused. The book seems written to the user who may have purchased a DSLR on a whim or to improve from their point and shoot cameras, yet it doesn't provide enough detail to really benefit that user.
I am a more advanced user, so I found the value to be in the aspects on composition. Those aspects are presented well, they are presented in a simplified manner, and they will benefit the novice user. The technical aspects discussed I think will be a bit more useful to a user with some technical understanding already, not because they will teach you something but more because they will reinforce what you already know with respect to the technical and linking it to the art.
The truth though becomes that there are many better books out there. The true novice photographer should go after a book like Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson or similar books. This book here, is the type you may be better off checking out at a library after you have a bit more background and understanding or if you need fresh new ideas.

The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital Photographers Review

This book is great for those digital photographers who would like to enhance their photos without taking a class. Having used PS 7, I felt like I needed to take a class on how to remove red eye. With Elements 3, it gives you two options on ways to remove red eye. Does you flash leave you with an overexposed shot?...do A, then B, and finally C. DONE! Well written book and very simple to use.
Being a Mac user, I was a bit disappointed that the book was written for Windows--beware that PSE 3 for Windows has more features than the equivalent version for the Mac. There are some different key strokes between the Mac and Windows version, so Mac users will need to keep that in mind when following the instructions.
Otherwise the book is very helpful and easy to follow.
Update:
I"ve been going back to this book every week and still learning more and more advanced techniques--eye and teeth whitening, sharpening eyes, removing hotspots, and many others. Its almost like a cookbook with very simple directions. Picture quality in the book is great, so you can SEE the difference in the before and after. With advances in printers and cameras, one can truely print at home like a pro.

Digital Photography Visual Quick Tips Review

Visual Quick Tips is definitely is on my "don't leave home without it" list. It is an essential part of anyone's photo bag. For the beginner to expert, Visual Quick Tips stimulates your creativity, reminds you of solutions, and increases the "dynamic range" of your thinking! It is like having a professional photographer readily available as a mentor whispering in your ear "Try this". Easy to read, easy to find your topic, it concisely gives you the answer on how to get a WOW picture.
I have a library of photography "how-to" books, but this one, on two, pages, taught me more about depth of field and assessing the shooting conditions then all of them combined! Sometimes you need a book not to just give you the answers, but to help you ask the questions that will let you take better pictures.

Digital Photographer's Handbook, 4th Edition Review

As a relatively novice photographer (haven't owned one since my old Brownie Hawkeye) with some knowledge of computers and a new digital camera, I've been working my way through as many books on digicams and image-editing software as I can find. Some are pretty general, some are more specialized, but most seem to repeat the same mostly superficial information and advice on both photography and digital editing. This book is the great exception! Ang is a very talented photographer and this lushly printed... volume is crammed with his work, but he's also a very good teacher. The first part of the book, under the heading of "Total Photography," is a mini-course in types of cameras and lenses, lighting, optical physics, and the essential practical differences in using film-based and digital cameras. (There's also a survey of information on specific models of cameras, printers, and scanners, which will soon be outdated and which might have been omitted.) The second section, "Photography for the Digital Age," leads you through such topics as composition, zoom, optical distortion, color balance, and how to avoid or at least fix the most common mistakes; I learned a great deal from his clear explanations and visual examples. "A Compendium of Ideas" is almost a separate book, being an excursion through all the major categories of subjects that interest people with cameras, from buildings and travel to microphotography and high-speed sports; you'll want to return to this section now and then for leisurely browsing. "Radical Conversions" and "All about Image Manipulation" are worth the price of the book all by themselves, with very clear and often very detailed discussions of issues which I'm sure are old hat to experienced shutterbugs but which are new and often perplexing to me, including proper cropping, burning-in and dodging, sharpening, blurring, cross-processing, color vs. black-and-white, and lots of others. Ang is quite good at balancing received photographic wisdom with new digital ideas. He also gets deeply into such computer-specific subjects as levels, cloning, and the differences and similarities between channels, layers, and masks. (He seems not to have much use for such glitzy effects-filter tricks as stained glass and embossing filters, with which I have to agree.) "The Output Adventure" is very good on getting the color on your monitor to agree with the color your printer produces, and there's a final section on portfolios, copyrights, and the business of photography. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography: 107 Lessons on Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images Review

This book is well written full of interesting facts and nice pictures. It is geared toward the Apple Computer user and Photoshop photoediting. If those are your system give this book a fourth star. But there are better choices for less money if you are using a PC for editing and any photo-editing software including Photoshop, MS Digital Photo, Camedia etc etc.
My personal favorite is K.I.S.S. Guide to Digital Photography which is ten bucks cheaper, better written, more informative for the beginner and all around better instruction for the beginner to digital photography.
