Professional Techniques for Digital Wedding Photography Review

My wife and I are long-time photographers (digital and film) who are planning on adding wedding photography to our resumes. We found this book to be useless.
Consider the title: Professional Techniques for Digital Wedding Photography. First, there is very little content in this book that would qualify as a "professional technique." In fact, only a handful of pages are dedicated to any sort of photographic technique. Second, much of the book is wasted trying to convince the reader that it's time to invest in digital photography. Well, if you've purchased a book for "...Digital Wedding Photography", there's a pretty good chance that you've already made (or are about to make) the leap into the digital medium.

As for content, I am not sure to whom the authors are targeting this book. The initial chapters are spent trying to convince the professional photographer that his/her days are numbered if he/she is still shooting film. The remainder of the book appears to be targeting aspiring wedding photographers by providing a marginally useful discussion of the business end of wedding photography (something a professional is already familiar with) along with a very shallow treatment of Photoshop techniques. Finally, the photos are, by and large, less than inspirational.
If you are a newbie hoping to start your own wedding photography business, this book may provide a few useful tidbits but won't do much to get you there. More likely, you will be annoyed by the condescending digital-or-nothing tone prevalent throughout this book. If you are a professional photographer, then you are probably already familiar with the pros & cons of switching to digital photography. If not, I suggest putting the $30 toward a new lens and try a free book instead: the Yellow Pages. Find a nearby professional camera shop. You'll get more information regarding the costs and advantages of going digital than you will from this book.

CR Gibson Wedding Collection Memory Book Review

I really love this wedding album, it is just what I was looking for! There is room for a guestbook, a log of gifts from the shower and the wedding, and areas to post pictures, invitations, etc.

On-Camera Flash Techniques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photography Review

Disclaimers:
1. I do know Neil van Niekerk
2. I use very little flash
I've known Mr. Niekerk for more than a few years and there are few photographers for whom I have as much respect, personally or professionally.
While I am known for my "available light" work I do consider a mastery of light, be it available or supplemental, to be crucial for the production of great images.
Mr. Williams states, eloquently, in his foreword that we live in the age of the "quick-fix" during which period it really does seem to be de rigueur to eschew knowledge and learning.
If you recognize that "flash" is your weak point, or if you desire to improve your lighting skills & knowledge then I suggest that this book should not only be on your purchase list, at the top :), but also that you do spend the time reading, practicing and understanding the techniques and concepts presented in it, paying particular attention to Mr. van Niekerk's statement regarding manual exposure; "You decide. Not the camera." This is of key importance and is often overlooked or neglected
The book itself is very well written, using precise, unambiguous language leaving little, if any, room for misunderstanding. The chapter subjects are comprehensive.
The diagrams are clear and concise and each and every photograph in the book illustrates its point very clearly. My only issue with the foreword is that Mr. William's statement this "is a fantastic book" is that it is not in bold print!
It is indeed a fantastic book. It's not a quick fix, I don't believe it was ever intended to be one.
It does require reading and practice, after all practice does make perfect!
George Weir

Digital Wedding Photography Review

The first thing one notices about Paul Gero 's new book, Digital Wedding Photography, is the stunning photographs. It's not just that they are stunning; you'd expect a book about photography to have good photographs. These images have a certain quality: a freshness, they are real, exuberant. You know these moments are not staged, made to look romantic, like a fashion shoot or a pretend wedding. Yet, every photograph evokes beauty and emotion. It's more than composition, though that is impeccable, no unnecessary information but the essentials. They are about life, a real story.
On the practical side the book is well organized starting with equipment, then discusses organizing your shoot and yourself to actually photograph a wedding. Gero talks about what makes a great photograph, the different styles and approaches. Chapter three and four goes over what events make up a wedding day and what to look for and organize your story around visually. He emphasizes the art of visual storytelling, discussing the broad strokes as well as the details. Sprinkled thorough out are technical tips and tricks that he has learned and developed over the years.
As a long time photojournalist now doing wedding photography myself, Gero's first four chapters were an affirmation of the fine work being done in this growing field of documentary wedding photography. What I needed was a bit of technical help. I went digital two years ago and every day I learn something new. The second half of Digital Wedding Photography filled a HUGE bill on the technical side and I have poured over the advice and step-by-step walk-through techniques. With each new technique I found myself saying, "So that's how you do that!" It sure beats my trial and error method. I began using his tips immediately.
In the last year or so I have bought at least 8 books and guides to wedding photography. Some good, others not so helpful. Paul Gero's book is most definitely number one on my list. Enthusiastically agree with reviewer DJL.
