Nikon D3000 Digital Field Guide Review

Recently got a D3000, although the manual explained the camera, the D3000 Digital Field Guide completely surpassed the manual and any other book that I have read about DSLR's. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a D3000, it should be mandatory :) The book goes into great detail about the different settings that can be used with the camera, how to achieve certain photos and also has a glossary in the back if you don't understand some of the photography words like me. The book also comes with a gray card and color checker and explains how to use it and the reasoning behind it. As a new mother I wanted to have professional looking photos of my baby and now I do, I didn't have to pay someone else to achieve it either! Another great thing about the book is the size, you can take it with you on your photo taking adventures, it is easy to flip through and find which settings you should use to take amazing photos in any situation. Overall the book gets you ready and comfortable with your D3000. After reading it, you have the sense of excitement about taking photos, because you actually know what you are doing instead of just taking snapshots.

Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D3000 Review

It bothers me that camera's owners manuals become less detailed, explain less and less how to use the functions of your camera, are written for English speakers by non-English speakers (some of the instructions cause you to shake your head and you can't even begin to guess what in heck they were talking about) and now you usually get a "quick start" guide with the rest of the owners manual on a CD, and again, it's usually not as complete as you'd like it to be.
Get yourself a Magic Lantern guide for your specific model camera! It will tell you step-by-step in plain language what the controls of your camera do, and how to use them. If you've ever been frustrated because you looked at a button on your camera and said: "What's that, and what's it do?" then the Magic Lantern guides are what you need! I have them for each model of camera I own.
Even if the owners manual is fairly clear, the Magic Lantern guides usually expand on them and take the instructions even further.
If you're frustrated because you don't know how to use all of the bells and whistles on your new camera and the owner's manual isn't that much help then get yourself a guide for your specific model camera and start enjoying it as never before!

Mastering the Nikon D3000 Review

I just got a Nikon D3000 about a month ago; this is my first DSLR. I selected Darrell Young's book based on the stellar reviews for his other books.
First of all, I think it's a great book for introduction to DSLRs. The first two-thirds of the book just goes over the camera's functions and buttons in great detail. The info there is a subset of what you can get by downloading and reading the 200+ page Nikon manual. It's definitely organized better and looks prettier. However, as a techie, I'm comfortable reading instruction manuals, so this part of the book didn't do much for me in terms of learning new stuff.
The last third of the book is where it got more exciting for me, with his explanations of exposure, aperture and shutter speed, white balance etc. I guess I need a book which teaches me how to take better pictures which this camera, and not just what the buttons and controls do.
In summary, I think the book itself is well-written and great for beginners and non-techies, but just didn't meet all my needs perfectly.
