David Busch's Nikon D300s Guide to Digital SLR Photography Review

When I got my Nikon D300s, I realized that a camera this sophisticated deserved an advanced guidebook like this one, stuffed with detailed descriptions and advice on using what I think is Nikon's best-ever DX format camera. The tiny pocket sized guides are OK for entry level cameras, but just don't cut it for an advanced model like the D300s, unless all you want to do is look up some menu settings, and the manual packed in the box with the camera already has that information. What we really need is a book that fully explores all of the D300s's features, providing an easy introduction for beginners, supplemented with more detailed content for those of us who want to learn more about photography with this great camera. I was delighted to find that author David Busch has taken that approach with David Busch's Nikon D300s Guide to Digital SLR Photography.
The book is divided into two parts. The first five chapters, amounting to 230 pages (which is longer than some guidebooks devote to an entire camera) introduce you to the Nikon D300s, its controls, setup, and options. Chapters 1 and 2 get you started, with basic instructions for setting up the camera and using its main features. The author helpfully provides a green-highlighted summary paragraph at the beginning of each section, so, if you already know, for example, how to charge the battery or format a memory card, you can skip to the next section. Instead of two or three small pictures with arrows pointing to various controls, Busch has dozens of close-up photos of the camera's components. For example, there are six pictures and five pages devoted to installing and using the MB-D10 battery grip. I love the way this part of the book is organized. The author doesn't bog you down with excessive detail. Each section has more than enough information to get you started, then, if necessary, refers you to a later chapter where there is room for even more advice. The manual that comes with the camera sometimes has you jumping around to four or five different pages to locate the information you need. This one uses cross references intelligently.
Busch gives you more than 130 pages just on the menus and settings you can choose with the D300s, and a large section of tables with recommended settings for half a dozen different photography environments, such as landscapes, sports, studio photography, close-ups, etc. You'll learn what the options are for each setting, with logical reasons why you might want to use each of the options. Outstanding, and useful for beginners and advanced photographers alike.
The second half of the book, nearly 300 pages long, teaches you photography, specifically with the Nikon D300s, with chapters on understanding exposure, a whole chapter just on autofocus, another on lenses that includes evaluations of all the most common Nikon lenses, and working with electronic flash.
If all you want are listings of the settings and menus to tuck in your camera bag, the little book packed with the camera does the job pretty well. But if you want to learn how to master your Nikon D300s, this book belongs at your side.
